Google uses valid product identifiers to match offers to products, and missing or incorrect GTINs can restrict visibility or cause product issues. The fix starts in your Shopify variant data, not with a bigger advertising budget.
What is going wrong?
A product can be available in Shopify and still struggle in Google Merchant Center. Google uses the GTIN, brand and manufacturer part number (MPN) to understand which exact item an offer represents. Its product data specification warns that incorrect or missing identifiers can lead to limited eligibility, incorrect listings or disapprovals. Google also cautions against inventing identifiers simply to fill a required-looking field. [1]
For a reseller, the correct EAN or UPC is usually supplied by the manufacturer. Your internal SKU is not a substitute for a manufacturer-assigned GTIN. Shopify supports barcodes on products and variants, and its Google & YouTube integration includes specific troubleshooting guidance for missing GTIN or MPN errors. [2]
Why operators should care
Bad product identifiers create a data quality problem across channels. A merchant may see an active Shopify product, assume its Google feed is healthy, and spend time changing campaign settings when the underlying item data needs correction. Missing GTINs do not automatically mean every product will be rejected: handmade, customised and some other products genuinely have no assigned identifier. The correct treatment depends on the item and Google's category requirements.
For example, consider a retailer selling three sizes of a branded product. If a feed repeats one identifier across distinct manufacturer variants, or substitutes an internal SKU where the manufacturer GTIN belongs, Google may not reliably match the individual offers. Treat this as a catalogue integrity check, not a creative optimisation exercise.
How to apply this in Shopify
- Export affected items. Open Merchant Center's product diagnostics and identify offers with missing or incorrect identifier warnings. Capture the affected item IDs and variants.
- Check the source of truth. Compare each offer with supplier product data. Confirm the manufacturer-assigned GTIN, brand and MPN where applicable; do not fabricate values.
- Correct variant-level data. Open the relevant product or variant in Shopify and review its barcode field. Different manufacturer variants should be mapped to their appropriate identifiers.
-
Handle genuine exceptions. For products without assigned identifiers, follow Google's
identifier_existsrequirements rather than inserting a made-up EAN. - Resynchronise and check again. Let the Google & YouTube channel update Merchant Center, then confirm whether the specific warnings have cleared. Keep the diagnostics export as an audit trail.
Before increasing Shopping spend, audit the first batch of flagged products against Shopify's source data. Pleroma Commerce can help structure a repeatable product-feed QA process.
