Marketplace margin calculator

Work out what actually remains from one sale after commission, shipping, advertising and returns. Compare channels side by side.

Channel Commission % Fixed fee Left Margin Min price for 20%

Commission rates are indicative and editable. Check the current rate for your category - they change several times a year.

Margin is calculated on net, not gross

The most common mistake in a marketplace P&L is comparing a gross selling price with net costs. Commission is charged on the gross price including VAT, while your cost of goods is net. This calculator converts the price to net using your VAT rate, then subtracts commission calculated on gross — which is what actually leaves your account.

What the numbers mean
Advertising % Ad spend as a share of net revenue on that channel — the inverse of ROAS. 8% equals 12.5× ROAS.
Returns % The share of revenue lost to returns you cannot resell, plus the return shipping you absorb. In apparel this is often the largest single cost after the goods themselves.
Min price for 20% The gross price you would need on that channel to clear a 20% net margin at the costs you entered. If it is above what the market pays, that channel does not work for this product.
Why commission rates are editable

Because hard-coded rates go stale. Allegro and Amazon revise their commissions several times a year and both charge different rates by category — a tool that tells you ‘Allegro is 11%’ with confidence is wrong most of the time. The defaults here are a starting point. Enter the rate from your own settlement report and the answer becomes real.

Why we built it

Deciding which channel to open is a margin question before it is a marketing question. We have told clients not to launch on a channel because the arithmetic did not work at their cost base — that conversation goes faster with a table than with an opinion. The full version, with your real settlement data across every channel, is part of the Store & Channel Audit.

Questions & answers

Is marketplace commission charged on the gross or net price?

On the gross price, including VAT. Your cost of goods is net. Comparing the two directly is the most common way a marketplace P&L ends up looking better than it is.

What commission does Allegro charge?

It depends on the category and changes several times a year, which is why this calculator lets you type the rate rather than hard-coding one. Take the number from your own settlement report — it is the only rate that is definitely yours.

What is a healthy margin on a marketplace?

For most physical goods, 20% net after every cost is a workable floor and 30% gives room to advertise properly. Below 10% a single wave of returns or one price war wipes the channel out.

How do I convert ROAS into an advertising percentage?

Divide 100 by your ROAS. 10× ROAS is 10% of revenue spent on ads, 16× is about 6%. The calculator asks for the percentage because that is what hits the margin.

Should returns be included in margin?

Yes, as a percentage of revenue. Ignoring them is why a channel looks profitable in month one and stops being so in month four when the returns settle. In apparel it is often the biggest cost after goods.

Why is my own store more profitable than a marketplace?

Lower commission — payment fees rather than a channel cut. The trade-off is that you pay for traffic yourself, so a fair comparison puts a realistic advertising percentage on the store row.

What if the minimum price is higher than the market price?

Then that channel does not work for that product at your cost base. The honest options are a cheaper cost of goods, cheaper fulfilment, a different product for that channel, or not opening it.

Does this include marketplace subscription fees?

No — monthly account fees are fixed costs, not per-unit costs. Divide them across expected monthly volume and add the result to the fixed fee column if you want them in the per-sale view.

Does VAT OSS change the calculation for cross-border sales?

Yes. Selling into another EU country means that country's VAT rate applies once you pass the threshold, which changes the net price from the same gross. Run the calculation per destination market rather than once.

How do I do this properly across a full catalogue?

With settlement data rather than estimates, product by product, so you can see which SKUs subsidise which. That is part of the audit.
