European Market Entry

For US & UK brands

Europe is not a market. It's 27.

US and UK brands don't fail in Europe. They fail in 27 places at once — because they launch ‘in Europe’, and there is no such market. Same product, same budget, same brand. The gap is the checkout, the delivery options, the marketplace that actually carries the category, and the registration nobody told you about.

Quick answer

Pleroma Commerce takes US and UK Shopify brands into European markets one country at a time: market selection, local checkout (BLIK, iDEAL, Klarna, pay-by-invoice), delivery that meets local expectations (parcel lockers, pickup points), the marketplaces that carry each market (Amazon, Allegro, bol, Kaufland, Cdiscount, OTTO), native-language listings, and compliance filed before launch (VAT OSS, WEEE, GPSR, packaging EPR). One senior team, everything in-house, based in Toruń, Poland. Every engagement starts with a one-week Store & Channel Audit (fixed fee, credited against any project).

Market Checkout & delivery Marketplaces that carry it Before you ship
Germany The EU's largest e-commerce market. PayPal, invoice (Rechnung) and Klarna outrank cards, and SEPA direct debit is expected. DHL and Packstation lockers. Amazon.de dominates; OTTO is second and Kaufland the fastest-growing; also eBay.de, and Zalando for fashion. LUCID packaging registration, WEEE/ElektroG for anything electrical, an Impressum on every page, the 30-day lowest-price rule for promotions.
Poland BLIK handles the majority of online payments; a checkout without it looks foreign. InPost parcel lockers are the default delivery option, ahead of every courier. Allegro carries roughly 95% of marketplace sales; Amazon.pl is a distant second. Erli, Empik, Morele and Ceneo for the long tail. Standard EU set. Polish-language listings and returns that comply with consumer law. Allegro connects to Shopify only through a PIM layer.
France Carte Bancaire, PayPal and a growing BNPL share (Alma). Pickup points (Mondial Relay, Colissimo) matter as much as home delivery. Amazon.fr, Cdiscount, Fnac/Darty, ManoMano for DIY, La Redoute and Leroy Merlin by category. The Triman logo and EPR registration (Citeo), French-language content required by law, strict consumer-rights wording.
Netherlands & Belgium iDEAL dominates Dutch checkout; Bancontact in Belgium. PostNL and bpost; high tolerance for cross-border shipping. bol leads in both countries; Amazon.nl is a minor player. Requires Dutch content and local returns handling. Standard EU set. Dutch, plus French for Belgium. Packaging EPR (Verpact, Fost Plus).
Italy & Spain Cards and PayPal, but cash on delivery still converts in Italy and Bizum is growing in Spain. A slower last mile, so set expectations. Amazon.it and Amazon.es dominate; eBay; El Corte Inglés, PcComponentes, Miravia and Worten in Spain. Standard EU set plus national packaging schemes (CONAI, Ecoembes). Native-language listings; machine-translated Italian is spotted instantly.
Nordics Klarna invoice and pay-later dominate; Swish in Sweden, MobilePay in Denmark. High price tolerance, low patience for friction. Amazon.se, CDON, Fyndiq. Smaller volumes, higher margins. Norway is outside the EU: separate customs and VAT (VOEC). Sweden and Denmark follow the standard EU set.
Czechia & Slovakia Cash on delivery and bank transfer are still common; Packeta pickup points are the default. Alza for electronics and general merchandise, Allegro (formerly Mall), Kaufland. Standard EU set. Czech and Slovak content; the natural CEE bridge from a Polish base.
United Kingdom Cards, PayPal, Klarna. Royal Mail and Evri; next-day delivery is expected. Amazon.co.uk, eBay, OnBuy, The Range, the B&Q marketplace. Outside the EU since Brexit: UK VAT, UKCA marking, a UK Responsible Person, customs on every EU–UK parcel.

This is the short version. The audit maps it to your category, your price points and your catalogue.

What applies everywhere in the EU
VAT OSS / IOSS One EU-wide VAT return for distance sales above the €10,000 threshold; IOSS for low-value imports. Storing stock in another country — in an FBA warehouse, for example — triggers VAT registration there. The customs regime for low-value parcels is changing during 2026 — we model it before you commit stock.
GPSR Since December 2024, every consumer product needs an EU Responsible Person, traceability and safety documentation. Marketplaces block listings without them.
Packaging & WEEE Extended producer responsibility is national, not EU-wide: a separate registration in every country you ship to. Electricals need WEEE registration on top.
Price promotions Any advertised discount must reference the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Black Friday pricing is effectively locked from late October.
Consumer rights A 14-day right of withdrawal, a two-year legal guarantee of conformity and mandatory pre-contract information. Your US returns policy does not transfer.

Questions US and UK brands ask first
Which European market should we enter first? Usually not the one you assume. Germany has the deepest demand and the heaviest compliance; Poland has the fastest marketplace entry and the lowest cost of testing; the Netherlands has the highest acceptance of cross-border shopping. The answer depends on your category, your price point and where your EU traffic already comes from — which is what the audit measures.
Do we need a European entity or warehouse? No. Most brands start cross-border from a localised Shopify store with an EU fulfilment partner and OSS or IOSS for VAT. An entity becomes worth it at volume or for specific categories. We tell you when, not before.
Does Amazon.de cover Europe? It covers Germany and reaches into Austria. It does not cover Poland, where Allegro carries roughly 95% of marketplace sales, or the Netherlands, where bol leads. A brand ‘launched in the EU’ via Amazon.de has launched in roughly one and a half countries.
What has to be registered before we sell? VAT (OSS or IOSS), an EU Responsible Person under GPSR, packaging registration in each country you ship to, WEEE for electricals, and terms that comply with consumer law. Marketplaces verify all of it before they let you list.
How long does a first market take? A single marketplace: 2–3 weeks. A full market entry with storefront, marketplaces, compliance and localisation: 6–10 weeks. Timelines run from the day we have access and data.
Why a team in Poland? Because Europe is what you are buying. Allegro, Kaufland, BaseLinker, BLIK and parcel lockers are our home turf, not a research project. Ten years in the UK market on top. And senior Central European operators cost roughly half what their US equivalents do.
