In short
Shopify has started rolling out Canvas, a new way to build and edit a Shopify theme with Sidekick. It is useful for fast design experiments, but early access has important limits, so treat it as a testing workspace before you use it on a live store.
What changed
Shopify announced Canvas on 1 October 2026.[1] Canvas shows store templates side by side and lets you ask Sidekick to change a theme from a written description. The preview is a render of the real theme code, not a static mock-up, so you can inspect interactive pages and different screen sizes before deciding whether a change works.
Shopify also says Canvas is still in early access and is available only to certain stores.[2] It works on desktop. It supports Shopify-developed themes and custom themes, but not third-party themes. You cannot translate theme content directly in Canvas, configure app blocks or app embeds there, or customize a theme for different Markets.
Why it matters for Shopify sellers
The useful part is speed. A store manager can describe a new hero section, collection layout or product-page change and see the result without starting with Liquid or a settings panel. That makes Canvas a practical tool for prototyping campaigns and redesign ideas.
The risk is assuming the AI workspace already covers the whole Shopify theme workflow. It does not. A design that looks correct in Canvas can still depend on app blocks, translations, market-specific settings or update processes handled elsewhere. TechCrunch also reported that these areas are outside the initial launch.[3]
How to apply
- Check whether your store has Canvas access and whether your current theme is supported.
- Make a copy of the theme and use that copy for the first Canvas experiment. Pick one visible change, such as a homepage hero or collection section.
- Ask Sidekick for the change, then test navigation, product templates, mobile views and any affected app content outside Canvas as well.
- Before publishing, check translations, Markets, app embeds and theme-update implications separately. Keep a record of what changed so you can compare or roll back.
Canvas can reduce the time between an idea and a working theme change. For a European store, the safe approach is to use that speed without skipping the parts Canvas cannot yet manage.
Next step
Pleroma Commerce can review how theme changes interact with apps, Markets and sales channels before they reach customers.
